Character Development | Social Skills Training

Character Development—
Social skills are one of the most important components in kids character development because these skills will have a great influence on the way a child builds relationships with others while growing up.
Abraham Lincoln said, “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.” Good character is doing the right thing because it is right to do what is right. For example, being kind to others even if you do not like them is a demonstration of good character expressing through highly developed social skills.
Parents sometimes, and very unfortunately, tend to get wrapped up in their children’s school success and academic achievements only. By erring in this way moms and dads end up neglecting the strong development of their children’s character and social skills. Why is this problematic? Here’s why:

“The essential thing is not knowledge, but character.”

Why is character development in kids by parents so vital?
Because You… Yes YOU!
have the
greatest influence
on your children.
Is teaching healthy, strong character traits to your child a priority in your daily living?  I certainly hope so!

Teachers, Character and Social Skill Development

Teachers on the other hand also have role to play in your child’s social skills development. The activities being done in school as well as the lessons being taught all contribute to the enhancement of your child’s personality. As such, it is your responsibility as a parent to encourage your child to participate in these activities actively and with a positive attitude.
It is also encouraged that you reach out to your children’s teachers and learn how you can make your home conducive to kids character development. It is not enough that you assist your children with their homework and projects. You must also make a point to discuss with them the events of the day, including any issues or concerns that they may have with lessons, classmates, and even friends.

Character Development Needs Nurturing

An open line of communication between you and your children is one of the best ways that you can help in developing their social skills. By having the freedom to voice their opinions in a civil manner you are allowing them to have confidence in themselves. As a result, your children will be more active and willing to participate in discussions about lessons and allow them to interact with other people in an effective manner without fear of being discriminated against or judged.

“Character is higher than intellect.
A great soul will be strong to live,
as well as strong to think.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Always remember that kids character development starts at home, and you as a parent play an important role in the social and moral development of your child.
The values and the morals that you teach your children while they are young will be with them for the rest of their lives, and you have the ability to point them in the right direction. By balancing your priorities for academic excellence and kids character development you will certainly ensure that you are well on your way to raiseing a well-rounded child!
